Director of Information Design at NEPS Contributes to New Book about Plain Language and Ethics

Robert Linsky, director of information design for NEPS, contributed to a new book on the ethical impacts of plain language. NEPS provides communications management solutions for several industries and operates from Salem, NH. The book, Plain Language and Ethical Action, is written by Russell Willerton of Boise State University and published by Routledge.

Willerton’s book explains what plain language is and what the plain-language movement has accomplished over the past several decades. The book shows how people who communicate in plain language can do ethical work by using principles of dialogic ethics.

Linsky contributed to the book’s third chapter, which provides perspectives on plain language and ethics from 25 professionals who live and work around the world. One of the central questions addressed in the chapter is whether, as Vice President Al Gore once asserted, plain language is a civil right.

“I’m very happy to have Robert Linsky’s perspective presented in my book,” said Willerton. “Robert has a wealth of experience with plain language and information design. In his responses to my questions, Robert emphasized that all professionals have obligations to do honest work and to avoid misrepresenting the facts. It is especially important to be honest and open when designing information for audiences of consumers, as Robert does. Robert has been practicing information design for more than 25 years, so his perspective is well informed.”
